- Benjamin Riddle, Pvt., Co. H (Secession Guards), 38th Va. Infantry — The following information is from Ruth Snead, great-great grandaughter: “Pvt. Benjamin Riddle died from wounds in right foot received on May 16, 1864 (second battle of Drewry's Bluff — Proctor Creek). Benjamin was admitted to Howard Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, and died July 25, 1864. I don't know where he is buried but in talking with the National Park Service in Richmond, they think he may have been buried in a mass grave nearby the hospital in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. He was conscripted in February 1864 and sent to Camp Lee, Richmond, Virginia. His second marriage was to Mary Ann Jones (daughter of Alexander Jones and Martha Giles) on 21 Dec 1855. They had 2 children: Gillard B. Riddle and George T. Riddle (my great-grandfather). The story goes that George T. Riddle as a little boy during the Federal occupation after the War would climb the trees and drop rocks on the Yankee Soldiers.”>
