Stanhope S. Hurt, Pittsylvania County Clerk of Court

By Preston B. Moses (1977).

Stanhope S. Hurt

Stanhope Scott Hurt, who wore a cape in winter and sat with his feet in a box, served as clerk of court for Pittsylvania County from 1874 until 1937 — sixty-three years, said to be the longest period of service in elective office in the United States. Clerk Hurt discouraged opposition because he campaigned all the time from one term to the next.
