Terry Fertilizer Warehouse, on Va. 57 (Depot Street) on the west side of the railroad tracks (see the line of boxcars in the distant background). Of the five figures in the picture, only the identity of the gentleman in the center is known: Charlie Terry, proprietor of the warehouse. (The photograph is from the collection of the late Garland Turner, nephew of Charlie Terry. The photo was taken by W. E. Grinnell, American Cyanamid Co., 635 Fifth Avenue, New York City, on March 20, 1930.) See also further Terry Warehouse photographs.
This photograph is from the Preston B. Moses Collection, and was probably photographed by Preston Moses. It was printed in the Star-Tribune, Chatham, Virginia, Thursday, October 6, 1977, p. 1B. The caption as written by Preston Moses is: "Lower Main Street in 1931, looking north when Whitehead Drug Store was in the building now occupied by Hampco. This photograph, taken prior to 1937, was labeled as the kitchen originally associated with the Col. Coleman D. Bennett house on North Main Street. It is said that during the Civil War period, the building served as the residence of Letitia Tyler Semple, who had served as hostess of the White House for her father John Tyler after Mrs. Tyler's death. A half-century before this photograph was taken, the Bennett main house had been replaced by the Shepherd home, later known as Magnolia Manor. The image is part of a file submitted by Mrs. Mattie Meadows on February 22, 1937, to the Virginia W. P. A. Historical Inventory Project (sponsored by the Virginia Conservation Commission under the direction of its Division of History).
There is some question as to whether the identity of this local photograph is accurate. Other photographs taken of the Bennett kitchen cabin during the 1930's and 1940's show a similar but perhaps not identical structure.
