Highway Marker Text

Markham (L 52)

Some miles northeast is the site of Markham, where was born Rachel Donelson, wife of President Andrew Jackson, 1767. Her father, John Donelson, leaving Virginia, became one of the first settlers of Tennessee. Fort Donelson was named for him.

Virginia Conservation Commission, 1940.

Marker location

The marker is located east of Chatham alongside the northbound lane of U. S. 29 Bypass, between the VA 57 and VA 685 exits. It is alongside the marker for Peytonsburg. The Markham marker was moved to this location in November 1989. (It was originally placed on U. S. 29 Business, just north of the Chatham town limits.)
