Barbara Hall graduated from Chatham High School in 1978, and Summa Cum Laude with a BA in English from James Madison University in 1982.

With a move to California, she became a television writer and producer. A list of television shows Barbara Hall has credits for include: Family Ties, Newhart, Anything But Love, Moonlighting, A Year in the Life, I'll Fly Away, Northern Exposure, ER, and Chicago Hope. She is currently the Executive Producer and co-creator of CBS's Judging Amy.

Barbara Hall is the author of seven novels, including A Summons to New Orleans. Additionally she is a singer and songwriter with the folk/bluegrass band The Enablers.

Her awards include the Humanitas Award for Television, several American Library Association Awards for Fiction and Booklist Awards, the Children's Defense Fund Award for Judging Amy and supporter of the Rape Treatment Center in Santa Monica, California.

Barbara Hall is married to Paul Karon who is a television producer. She has one child, a daughter, Faith, nine and a half years old.

She mentioned of her education at Chatham High School, "Thank God for Elsie Todd."

She is the daughter of Mrs. Flo Hall of Danville and the late Mr. Ervis Hall.
