Mark your calendars now to enjoy “Weaving Our Story,” the 2009 theme of Chatham's Christmas festival dating from the early 1980's. (Scroll down this page to see the full schedule of events below.)
The Chatham First Christmas Reception opens the weekend on Thursday night, December 3rd, with the first-ever exhibit of the 180-year-old Stone family collection of handwoven coverlets (see article) from Shady Grove plantation. In addition, visitors will enjoy the debut of a documentary “Weaving Our Story”, showcasing the oral history of Chatham through stories recounted by local citizens.
The traditional Lantern Lighting Celebration, Festival of Carols, and Yule Log Ceremony accompany the illumination of the town on Friday, December 4th followed by SoundCheck, an “open mic” event for all.
Visitors on Saturday will enjoy crafters, vendors, the Chatham Christmas Parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and Kinney Rorrer in concert with the New North Carolina Ramblers. The weekend closes with a presentation by the Chatham Arts performers and a Christmas sing-along by the Southern Virginia Baroque Youth Orchestra. All events are free and open to the public.
