Agnes Tune Painting

C. D. Bennett Kitchen House

Oil painting, 10" x 13," by Agnes Fulcher Tune, of the cabin behind the Shepherd-Thompson home (“Magnolia Manor”), North Main Street, Chatham, Virginia, ca. 1940.

The cabin pictured originally served as the separate kitchen of the Col. Coleman D. Bennett home, which was replaced around 1890 by the present “Magnolia Manor.” The cabin, which no longer exists, was reputedly the residence of President John Tyler's daughter Letitia Tyler Semple during the Civil War.

Notes:

• The painting is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rives Hardy, Callao, Virginia;
• Further information regarding the Col. Coleman D. Bennett kitchen is found in the Library of Virginia's Virginia Historical Inventory online. It appears that a photograph of a different (but similar in construction) building is erroneously filed with that WPA Writer's Project report.
