Virginia Colonial Revival Architecture
in Historic Chatham, Virginia

By Henry Mitchell.

Among the popular Colonial Revival variants are the Virginia Colonial Revival houses. Their appearance preceded Cape Cod Revival houses by several years. Virginia Colonials are very similar in form to Cape Cods; one exception is exterior chimneys on the ends of the structure, rather than the large central internal chimney usually seen on Cape Cods.

In Chatham, the Virginia Colonial Revivals appear to be merely stylistic variations on Cape Cods, in the same neighborhoods, and built at the same time or later than the Cape Cods.

(See also architectural pattern books from the period, containing Colonial Revival and Cape Cod Revival examples.)
