Paul M. Shelton (1915-1998)

CHATHAM — Paul Marshall "Papa" Shelton, 82, of 228 Whittle Street, died Thursday afternoon, April 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 15, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George Shelton and Ellen S. Shelton. He was owner and operator of Shelton's Saddlery in Chatham, a member of the International Christian Businessmen Committee, and a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church. He was inducted into the American Saddle Horse Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Jerry Lee Shelton. He was married to Judith Giles Shelton, who died Sept. 1, 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Kitty Ann Anderson of Danville, Ellen S. Commodore of Cary, N.C., and Judy G. Wheeler of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Frank Fuller. Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Chatham. The family will receive friends Saturday 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of his daughter, Kitty Ann Anderson, 118 Clarendon Circle.
