Over the years I have been asked several times to identify a tall tree with prominent warty bark. Usually the tree turned out to be a Hackberry, which is a member of the Elm family.

The Atlas of the Virginia Flora by Alton McCaleb Harvill lists three species native to the Dan River Region:

Unfortunately it takes experience over the years to identify hackberry trees as they are highly variable and furthermore may hybridize. To most of us it is probably sufficient just to recognize this warty bark tree as one of the Hackberry group.

Hackberry trees are well established along Danville's Riverwalk Trail.
