This Toadstool is a mysterious little species. There it is nestled amongst molds, yeasts and lichens — all related in the kingdom Fungi. Protozoans and bacteria are infinitesimal companions.

It is wondrous to me how some may perceive the elusive beauty of such an obscure microhabitat. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow writes in his Birds of Passage:

“Come, wander with me,” she said,
“Into regions yet untrod;
And read what is still unread
in the manuscripts of God.”
