Mary Mitchell's family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the following two recipients, both of which were significant to Mary.



Martha Washington Inn, Abingdon, Virginia

The Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, formerly Martha Washington College, attended by Mary Mitchell prior to her enrollment at Emory & Henry.

Wiley Henry Scholarship Fund

To donate to the Wiley Henry Scholarship Fund, go to Emory & Henry's online gift form, specify the “Wiley Henry Fund,” and list the gift as in memory of Mary Helvey Mitchell.

Mary and Trubie Mitchell supported the Wiley Henry Scholarship Fund, established to honor the “Martha Girls” who came to Emory, and the relationship between E&H and Martha Washington College. Mary attended “Martha” prior to its closing during the Great Depression, at which point she transferred to Emory & Henry, and was graduated summa cum laude in 1933.

The scholarship is named for Mr. Wiley Henry, long-time employee of Martha Washington College and the Martha Washington Inn.

For many years, Mary and Trubie Mitchell supported Habitat for Humanity. At the time of her death, Mary was Central Presbyterian Church's oldest member. Habitat for Humanity is a significant focus of the church's outreach, and the church has constructed and assisted in constructing several Habitat homes.
