These photographs of the Pittsylvania County Courthouse in Chatham, Virginia, depict an event on March 17, 1955. Several of the ladies of the community prepared a program of local history interpretation to mark the centennial of the courthouse's construction, for the benefit of students from the local public schools and Hargrave Military Academy.
School children line up outside on their way to a history lesson at the Courthouse. (Identification of students is welcomed; please send e-mail.)
The history lesson is in progress. On the front row are presenters Dorothy Whitehead Motley, Frances Hallam Hurt (back to camera, in Native American garb), Marguerite Law, Gertrude Jones, Maud Carter Clement, Margaret Floyd. (Identification of other individuals is welcomed; please send e-mail.)
